Operative and especially safe traffic routes are an indispensable component of every modern national economy in this world. They enable economic growth and simultaneously form the basis of everyday life. To ascertain and assess critical conditions of important elements of these transport infrastructures, e.g. highway and railroad bridges, it is necessary to realize a continuous monitoring of these structures. This creates a basis for decisionmaking for potential remedial measures in order to achieve optimal exploitation of economic capacities. Furthermore, calamities, e.g. the collapse of a bridge, can be prevented and such ensure public safety.

In the joint project LEVANGO, amongst the collaboration of experts from various disciplines, a long-term monitoring system is to be developed to identify critical conditions of traffic routes. The subject of consideration within this project is the Wehretalbrücke located in Northern Hesse, Germany. It is a 15-span prestressed concrete highway bridge with a total length of approx. 670m and a relatively large curvature in the groundplan.

Satellite-based deformation measurements of the Wehretalbrücke obtained through the analysis of Sentinel-1- and TerraSAR-X-satellite data serve as a basis. Additionally, on-site measurements at the structure are taken, using conventional deformation measurement methods for structural health monitoring, among others to validate the satellite data. By fusing the measured data with the simulated results of a computer model of the bridge, a monitoring system for critical conditions of this structure is to be realized.

Furthermore, the results obtained on the reference structure are used to design a large-scale, comprehensive monitoring concept in order to monitor a variety of bridges within a regional transportation infrastructure regarding their condition.
